Kinetic typography

Posted on January 8, 2011 by | 7 Comments

I always cringe when I see typography used badly, it makes me want to stab the designer in the face with the sharp pointy end of a sans serif ‘V”. The other night I felt this urge when I saw an add, I think it was for health insurance, that used kinetic typography badly. It was horrible and was really half arsed, like they spent 5 minutes on it. But if I see a great example of typography I can look at it, admire it and enjoy it for ages. I love Typography and I love a good looking type face. Rather than trying to explain what kinetic typography is I have collected some great examples of it for you, enjoy…

Got your link from Davin Montagne Blog and saw your blurb about Kinetic Typography ….. soooo true. Liked "Because I was so happy for you" a lot.

Thanks, that's great I was looking for those videos but couldn't find them. I love that part of Hungry Beast it was really well done, thoughtful and thought provoking.

I think the key things that make good Kinetic typography are: Nice contrast between type and background, Motion Blur effect and clean anti-aliasing.

I did notice in the portal promo that there was one segment with cake where the anti-aliasing left a little but to be desired and didn't match the quality of the rest of the video. I think this is fan made not by Valve. It may have also been intentional. What do you think?

Can't wait for Portal 2! Slippery goo! Tunnels! Messing optically with laser beams. Just can't wait to see the graphics and artwork in that game!

I thought the exact same thing. Probably because they enlarged a low resolution image.

As soon as Portal 2 go on sale or even pre-sale I'm buying it even if I have to sell a kidney on the black market to get enough cash to buy it.

Yeah they would have been using actual vector fontage and then they needed the cake but failed to trace it into a sizable vector image but thats ok. My videos are piss poor quality due to my lack of HD camera so I can't really talk. When I get an HD camera then I can talk. haha.

Are you in the habbit of paying for software? I noticed that most software out there today is pathetically unstable and causes me to curse and sometimes violently abuse my machine and I love my machine.

I would say that even you most popular applications work only 80% of the time. When I find an app for graphics, video, music, etc that actually works then I will most likely pay. I would invest a grand in a boxed copy of Lightwave 3D but there are too many sad/angry times.

Same goes for Synapse Audio Orion Platinum. I would have bought that if they would actually send it to me in a box with a cert but no! lazy bastards have it up for download for $150 like a bloody iTune. How can I know the download will finish. How can I put the box on my self to gaze at proudly and where is my certificate?

Adobe needs to pull the finger out with most of thier apps as well but until that time its the 7 seas for me.

At least you still do videos. I would like to get a HD camera some time so I can start producing video content. I have done a few pod casts which are fun to do.

I have paid for some software. But it's rare that I will shell out for a program. Most of the programs I run are free or OSS. I paid for my last 3 copies of Windows and have shelled out for a TechNet subscription so I can upgrade to Win 7 on my laptop and HTPC, and families PC is they want it. I pay for games on Steam because Steam is awesome and cheap, I have brought games I haven't even played yet. I'd like to purchase Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Dreamweaver. Untill then I'll use free or OSS. I try not to resort to the 7 seas for games and software as much as possible these days. It's really not that hard. I'll even buy music online, I have purchased a bunch of music that I had downloaded for free in the past because the artists deserve it. Bleep, Rephlex and BeatPort are my favourite places to purchase music.
