My 2c on Portal 2

Posted on May 8, 2011 by | No Comments

Portal 2 title

Portal 2 was one of the most anticipated games of 2011, it was certainly the only game of the year that I was really hanging out for. If I could only purchase one game all year it would have been Portal 2.

Released bundled in with the Orange Box Portal was more of an experiment than a proper game, so it was a huge surprise even to Valve when it became as popular as it did. It was original, fresh, funny, fun and challenging it was like nothing else out. So Portal 2 had a lot to live up to, and judging by the videos that Valve released leading up to the release of Portal 2 it looked like it was going to live up to it.

I think that the Potato Sack ARG was a brilliant piece of marketing by Valve, despite what others think and say about it. Not only did it get people to buy and play more games it also helped Portal 2 get released earlier, even if it was only a tiny bit early. I didn’t buy any of the games in the potato sack since I was happy to wait for Portal 2 and I already owned Defence Grid The Awakening , but I was stoked to find that there were 2 new levels for the game and one of them based on a portal Map! So I got something for nothing and it helped pass the time while I waited for Portal 2 to unlock on Steam. I pre purchased the game the second pre purchasing became available, I didn’t think twice about it and not for one second do I regret dropping the cash for it.

I have mixed feelings about Portal 2, I think it was a totally awesome game but I felt it could have been better. For me the game was too short and too easy. It took me 10 hours to complete and the longest that I was ever stuck on a puzzle was about 15 minutes. If I got stuck I’d have a short break then come back to it and I’d usually beat it. The final battle is reminiscent of the final level in Portal which is a bit of a let down.

Although I was a little disappointed with Portal 2 I think it’s a bit harsh to hold it up to the same standard as Portal. Portal 2 does bring new elements to the game and it does shed a little bit more light on the story behind Aperture Science. Having said that I am willing to ignore the shortcomings of Portal 2 because it is still an awesome game with new game play elements, new characters and it still has the same dark humor that made the original Portal such a great game. Portal 2 is an awesome tasting cake, no lie!
