Wulffmorgenthaler

I love Wulffmorgenthaler, they are so freaking hilarious, sometimes they can be a bit hit and miss but when they get it right you will LOL. One of my favorite’s is the Fucked-up crazy-ass, weirdo beaver who does all sorts of weird-ass things like make a dam wall out of tampons that dries up a rivver, the beaver is even on Facebook.

I Love ASUS too

Posted on December 4, 2010 by | No Comments

According to a recent PCWorld poll ASUS came out on top in the laptop and desktop department. Their laptops are great, I have one, a cheap one but it’s still good quality and I haven’t had an issue with it. ASUS are also famous for their great motherboards, although sometimes they are not the cheapest. The last 3 motherboards I have used in my PC builds were ASUS boards because they are so reliable. I have a spare ASUS motherboard from a build that didn’t work which I’m going to use in my NAS box build. Gigabyte also make great gear and I am using 2 Gigabyte mobos, 1 in my HTPC and the other in my main gaming rig.

Not surprisingly HP and Dell were named as some of the worst manufacturers, and they are both well deserving of the title of the worst. I see more HPs come through the workshop for repair than any oher laptop and have seen my fair share of Dells come back too. I wouldn’t recommend a Dell or HP to my worst enemy.

Another reason to BYO PC

Posted on December 2, 2010 by | No Comments

A law suit was brought against Dell in 2007 when Advanced Internet Technologies accused Dell of actively making efforts to hide known quality issues with it’s desktop machines. Namely their SX270 PCs. Dell settled the law suit earlier this year. Why did they settle? Because they had something to hide maybe?

The New York Times sifted through hundreds of documents related to the law suit and discovered that Dell knew more than they let on. A Dell study in 2004 concluded that 12 percent of its SX270 Optiplex computers would encounter problems over three years, the study also included it’s GX270 machines. Later the same year Dell raised the number to 45 percent. Although a 97 percent failure rate was a real possibility.

Despite this Dell allegedly still encouraged their sales people and technicians to stay quiet about the issue. Internally it was said that customers who brought 50 or less machines would be subject to a “fix on fail” policy, i.e. Dell would only help people when the PC failed, even though Dell knew about the problem.

Between 2003 and 2005 Dell ended up fixing 22 percent, about 4.6 million, of its 21 million Optiplex machines before they settled in September this year.

So why would you buy a pre built PC from Dell or anyone else for that matter? Ethics and morals don’t seem to be a part of their business plan.

The internet by numbers

Posted on December 1, 2010 by | No Comments

This comment is from #programming on FreeNode

<hypnosis> 1. The human cell contains 75 MB of genetic information
<hypnosis> 2. A sperm 37.5 MB.
<hypnosis> 3. In a milliliter, we have 100 million sperms.
<hypnosis> On average, one ejaculation releases 2.25 ml in 5 seconds.
<hypnosis> Using basic math we can compute the bandwidth of the human male penis as:
<hypnosis> (37.5MB x 100M x 2.25)/5 = (37,500,000 bytes/sperm x 100,000,000 sperm/ml x 2.25 ml) / 5 seconds = 1,687,500,000,000,000 bytes/sec = 1,687.5 TerraBytes/sec
<Jck_true> Sweet
<Jck_true> DoS attack!!!
<hypnosis> a bukkake would probably be a DDoS then
<hypnosis> 11 men would give 17 petabytes/sec

I love bash.org, it’s a gold mine.

More fun science How many megabytes in the human body? It’s estimated that the brain alone can hold anywhere between 1 and 1000 TB of information (source). The whole body’s storage capacity is estimated to be 34,179,687,500 TB (source). The internet is estimated to be 5 million TB, and Google has only indexed about 200 TB or .004% of the internet. Tim Berners-Lee on the next web

Posted on November 30, 2010 by | No Comments

Tim Berners-Lee is a legend and one of my heroes, because he invented the World Wide Web. In this video he talks about the future of the Internet.

The above video is from TED “a small nonprofit [web site] devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design.”. Stop watching your LOL cats, hit up TED and watch some videos that make you think.

Too much Cyanide & Happiness is never enough. Sometimes it a bit hit and miss, but more often than not it’s freakin’ hilarious. I love the way C&H takes the piss out of those wild life/survival shows.

Tilt-shift photography

Posted on November 26, 2010 by | 2 Comments

I remember when I saw my first Tilt-shift photo I was amazed and thought it was a photo of a miniature model train set. Later on I found out that it’s called tilt shift photography. I see it quite a bit in photography and have even brought some limited edition prints from a local Melbourne artist Ben Thomas from his City Shrinker web site. Not until recently had I seen a tilt shift video. The video above is awesome in every way possible.
