How much data can an IBM punch card store?

Posted on November 4, 2011 by | No Comments

Kulture - IBM punch card circa 1975

I have always known computer storage, files and data to be measured in bits and bytes, kilobytes and megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes ect…

My desktop PC has 3×1 TB HDDs and one 128 MB SSD HDD. I have 6 GB of RAM (3×2 GB sticks of RAM) in my desktop PC. I have an SD card from an old digital camera that holds 256 MB of data, the storage medium in my DSLR is a 1 GB CF card and I have a 16 GB MP3 player.

So when I was reading about punch cards that were used to operate early digital computers I got curious, how much data could they store? Specific formats of punch cards were indicated by the number of character positions available, e.g. 80-column card, instead of a storage value e.g. an 8 kilobyte punch card or 4 megabyte punch card. So what is the storage capacity of a punch card? [Read more...]

5 Fun facts about fonts and the environment

Posted on November 3, 2011 by | No Comments

Have you ever stopped to think how much your usage of type is contributing to global warming? How much energy, water and other finite resources it takes to use that type face? It’s time designers thought more about how their use of fonts and type faces contributes to global warming.

So here are some facts to help you become more eco friendly when using fonts and type faces.

  1. It takes 28,000 gallons of water to use comic sans, instead consider using a real font like Helvetica which only uses 17,800 gallons of water per a use.
  2. [Read more...]

What is Jungle? – The History 1992 – 1996

Posted on November 2, 2011 by | No Comments

There is no other genres that I love more than Jungle/D&B specially old skool Jungle/D&B, to me it still sounds as fresh and relevant today as it did years ago. This What is Jungle? Mix covers Jungle/D&B from 1992 to 1996. There are some real classics in this mix like Nasty Habits – Here Come The Drumz, Q-Project – Champion Sound (Alliance Remix), Origin Unknown – Valley Of The Shadows, Leviticus – The Burial (Lovers Rock Mix). I would agree that every tune in this mix is a real classic. You can find a write up about the mix on Drumtrip.

Typographic Tuesday – Linotype & Helvetica films

Posted on November 1, 2011 by | No Comments

Being a geek and lover of technology I love old skool technologies specially typographic technology like the Linotype which is why I’m excited about a documentary film called Linotype.

“Linotype: The Film” Official Trailer from Linotype: The Film on Vimeo.

“Linotype: The Film” is a documentary about Ottmar Mergenthaler’s amazing Linotype typecasting machine and the people who own and love these machines today. It looks like it’s going to be a great film, I can’t wait for it’s release.

If you are as geeky about typography as I am [Read more...]

Posted on October 30, 2011 by | No Comments

It’s Sunday arvo and you CBF doing much so what do you do? Waste a bunch of time playing flash games of course. But which flash game there are so many?! No problem I have got you covered with a great little game called Canvas Rider.

It’s a simple game, basically you ride a bike and try not to fall off while riding various tracks. Canvas Rider is a cut above a lot of other flash games because you can draw and ride your own tracks as well as other peoples tracks, you can also see other peoples replay of their high score. So get on your bike!

Porn! It’s not that bad

Posted on October 29, 2011 by | No Comments

http://www.daily.co.uk/ has announced that they will be taking pre orders for the .xxx domain. While the .xxx domain will make it easier to identify some adult orientated websites, although some sites are clearly identifiable as being adult entertainment orientated regardless of which domain they use. Really www.bigblackanallovers.com is pornographic? No way! It was a typo I swear!

The .xxx will probably still cause a stir amongst those with an overly tight sphincter. Regardless of whether you like porn or not there is no denying that porn has been good for the internet. [Read more...]

Stick bombs!

Posted on October 28, 2011 by | No Comments

Ok so this this is the coolest thing I have seen all week, it’s one of the coolest examples of kinetic energy that I have seen and the most fun you can have without a computer.

The subject in the video is called a stick bomb and there are a few methods of making a stick bomb using either the diamond, bow-tie, or cobra weave method. The stick bomb construction method used in the video is called the cobra weave for the way it rears up like a cobra snake. The cobra weave is the most impressive looking stick bomb when it goes off. There are plenty of tutorials around the net about how to construct a stick bomb using the cobra weave, hit up your favourite search engine and search for how to make cobra weave stick bomb.

I’m defiantly going to buy a bunch of pop sticks so I can try this for myself!

Tuesday time waster

Posted on October 25, 2011 by | No Comments

Todays time waster Into Space has had me hooked for a few day trying to beat my own best score. The aim of the game if it isn’t already blindingly obvious is to fly your space ship into space. There are obstacles to avoid, power ups to get and money to collect so that you can upgrade your ship so you can make it into space in as few days as possible. I have managed to fly into space in 26 days.

There are two things that I love: T-shirts and Doctor Who, so when I discovered this list of More than 100 Doctor Who T-shirts on Hide Your Arms I was stoked I never knew there were that many Doctor Who T-shirts, Andy has done a great job of writing up the list. There are some great Doctor Who T-shirts going about.

Don’t forget to hit up my project page and donate to help me get my first T-shirt design printed.
